Crime
After days of agonizing uncertainty, 37-year-old Saratu Jibo has been located in a Doha hospital where she was receiving treatment following her arrival in Qatar. The discovery brings relief to her family who had launched an intensive cross-border search involving Nigerian and Qatari authorities.

After days of uncertainty, anxiety, and a desperate search across borders, the family of 37-year-old Nigerian woman, Saratu Jibo, can finally breathe a sigh of relief after she was found safe in a hospital in Doha, Qatar. Saratu, who had traveled from Lagos to Doha aboard Qatar Airways flight QR1408, had become unreachable shortly after arriving in the Qatari capital, triggering concern among members of her family who feared the worst.
Her brother, Jonathan Jibo, had raised the alarm and appealed to Nigerians and relevant authorities to help locate his sister, who was traveling to Qatar for the first time and had no friends in the country who could readily assist in finding her. According to the family, Saratu’s accommodation had been arranged and paid for months before her journey, while a designated person was also waiting at the airport to pick her up.
But when she could not be found at the airport and failed to contact her family, anxiety quickly turned to panic. Saratu, who had worked at the Lagos airport for nearly 12 years, was expected to begin a new job in Doha weeks after her arrival. Her sudden disappearance therefore left her family desperately seeking answers after it was confirmed she had collected her luggage and exited the terminal.
With every passing hour deepening the family’s fears, efforts were intensified to establish her whereabouts. The Nigerian Embassy in Qatar, Qatar Airways, and other relevant authorities were contacted to assist in the investigation. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) also joined efforts to unravel the mystery surrounding the former airport worker's location.
The NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, had commenced specific efforts to establish what happened to Saratu after she left the airport. The search focused on tracking her movements from the moment she exited the arrivals hall, as the family remained in a state of high distress regarding her safety in a foreign country.
On Sunday, September 6, the frightening mystery finally gave way to an emotional moment of relief when it was discovered that Saratu had not disappeared under nefarious circumstances. Instead, she had fallen ill immediately upon her arrival in the country, leading to her being transported for emergency medical care.
Her brother, Jonathan Jibo, confirmed that she became sick after arriving in Qatar and was taken from the airport to a hospital, where she was eventually located by authorities. The discovery brought an end to the agonizing search and the uncertainty that had gripped the family since Saratu became unreachable.
Good news… My sister has been found today, she was sick and was taken to the hospital from the airport.
— Jonathan Jibo, Brother, Family Representative
Jibo expressed gratitude to everyone who joined the search for his sister, particularly the Nigerian Embassy in Doha, Qatar Airways, and Michael Achimugu for their roles in helping to establish her whereabouts. He also thanked Nigerians and other social media users who amplified the family’s appeal and helped keep the search alive during the critical period of her disappearance.
The case has highlighted the vulnerability of travelers arriving in unfamiliar countries, particularly those making their first international journeys without a local support network. For Saratu’s family, the immediate priority has shifted from the frantic search for her location to her medical recovery and eventual discharge from the hospital.
