Police Rescue Abuja Woman Found Chained, Emaciated After 16 Months in Confinement
For more than one year and four months, 36-year-old Grace Aniekuoku lived a nightmare hidden behind closed doors. Cut off from the outside world, chained inside a room, weakened by hunger and neglect, and forced to endure conditions that police described as inhumane, her cries remained unheard until a distress call changed the course of her life. Today, Grace is receiving medical treatment and beginning a long journey of recovery after operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command rescued her from what authorities say was a prolonged period of unlawful confinement allegedly orchestrated by her own brother.

Distress Call on June 12 Triggers Rescue Operation
According to the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Mohammed Sanusi, the rescue operation followed a distress report received on June 12, 2026. Responding swiftly, detectives attached to the Katampe Division were dispatched to the location - where they say the suspect became hostile and refused them access to the premises before officers forced their way in.

Upon gaining entry, officers discovered Grace in chains, in an extremely emaciated condition and lying on her own waste under deplorable sanitary conditions. For the officers at the scene, it was a grim reminder of how cruelty can sometimes thrive in silence.
A Son Who Vanished Two Years Ago
Even as Grace battles to regain her health and dignity, another painful chapter remains unresolved - the whereabouts of her son, who police say disappeared about two years ago. Preliminary investigations suggest that Grace's son was allegedly taken away to an unknown destination, and investigators believe the prolonged confinement may have been aimed at preventing her from seeking answers about the child's disappearance.

Search for Missing Boy Intensifies as Suspect Remains in Custody
While Grace receives urgent medical attention and rehabilitation, police have intensified efforts to locate the missing boy and uncover the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The FCT Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable members of society and ensuring that perpetrators of abuse are brought to justice.
A Case That Exposes the Silence Around Domestic Abuse
For many observers, the case raises troubling questions about how vulnerable individuals can become trapped in abusive situations without intervention for extended periods. Rights advocates say it underscores the importance of community vigilance and the need for residents to report suspicious situations involving abuse, neglect or unlawful confinement. As Grace begins the difficult process of rebuilding her life, her story stands as both a painful reminder of human cruelty and a testament to the life-saving power of timely intervention.
For now, one hope remains above all others - that the search for her missing son will lead to answers, reunion and healing for a mother whose ordeal has already lasted far too long.
