The Wikimedia User Group Nigeria has launched a 12-week fellowship to equip young volunteer editors with essential leadership and community management skills. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between technical expertise and leadership capacity to ensure the sustainability of free knowledge communities across Africa.

The Wikimedia User Group Nigeria has officially launched the maiden edition of its 12-week Wiki LeadershipX Initiative, selecting 50 participants from a pool of over 200 applicants. The fellowship, unveiled at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, is designed to build leadership, emotional intelligence, and community management skills among young Wikimedians across Africa.
Organisers noted that while many volunteers possess high technical competence in editing Wikipedia, leadership gaps have often hindered the growth and sustainability of their respective communities. The programme, launched in partnership with Knewrow, aims to address these specific deficiencies to prepare volunteers for larger organizational roles.
We discovered that many of our volunteers have the technical know-how but lack the leadership capacity needed to effectively manage communities and expand Wikimedia activities across the country. That is the gap this fellowship intends to bridge.
— Ayokanmi Oyeyemi, Programme Director and Coordinator, Wikimedia Nigeria

The fully funded virtual fellowship will run for 12 weeks, starting with four weeks of live online sessions facilitated by international leadership experts. Following the instructional phase, participants will transition into mentorship and practical leadership engagements to apply their learned skills in real-world scenarios.
The initiative has seen significant interest beyond Nigeria’s borders, attracting applications from candidates in countries including Ghana, Benin, Mozambique, South Africa, France, and Qatar. Out of the more than 200 applications received, only 50 candidates were selected for the inaugural cohort.
Beyond publishing information about Nigeria on Wikipedia, we believe it is important to equip our young people with the leadership skills required to sustain and grow the organisation. Leadership is essential if we are to build stronger communities and prepare the next generation.
— Ambassador Olushola Olaniyan, President, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria
Knewrow was selected as the strategic partner for the initiative after a rigorous vetting process involving over 50 leadership organisations. The partnership is viewed as an investment in nation-building and community stability rather than a purely commercial venture, according to the project's facilitators.
Recent experiences within the Wikimedia community highlighted the necessity for such structured training. Co-founder Kayode Yusuf noted that some volunteers previously struggled with basic administrative procedures and official communication, underscoring the need for intentional mentorship to prepare the next generation of contributors.
Leadership doesn't fall from the blue moon. It is a product of society. If we begin to prepare young people today, we will build a stronger and more sustainable nation tomorrow.
— Ayo Muritala, Chief Executive Officer, Knewrow
The LeadershipX Initiative is expected to strengthen volunteer capacity, promote wider access to free knowledge, and support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the areas of quality education and economic growth.
