VGC dispute: Documents show police deployment followed developers’ petitions

Documents obtained by Naijachronoscope have revealed that the deployment of policemen to a property in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos, followed formal petitions by developers seeking protection over alleged threats, property disputes, and interference with construction activities. These documents contradict claims circulating on social media suggesting that Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olohundare Moshood Jimoh had a personal interest in the property or used police resources to facilitate land acquisition.

The claims were initially raised by social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), regarding a long-standing dispute involving businessman Hammeed Tajudeen Akanbi. However, the records show that the developers approached the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for formal protection before any deployment was enacted.

History of the Land Dispute

The petitions, written by legal representatives and dated December 5, 2025, and January 20, 2026, state that the complainants possess valid Contracts of Sale and Lagos State Government Consent documents. These documents relate to the property following a 2022 settlement with the original owners. The complainants alleged that Akanbi, who initially presented himself as a land consultant in 2019, was involved in disputes over several parcels of land across Orchid Road, Alpha Beach Road, and Agungi.

According to the petitions, the complainants paid a N1.5 billion settlement regarding the dispute but later alleged that individuals were mobilized to invade the property, attack workers, and disrupt construction. Photographs attached to the petitions showed warnings inscribed on the site's fence regarding ownership. This prompted the developers to request police protection to prevent further interference with the site.

Addressing Allegations Against AIG Jimoh

The revelations come amid renewed allegations against Jimoh, who was the Commissioner of Police for Lagos State when one of the petitions was submitted and currently serves as the AIG in charge of Zone 2. VDM had circulated a voice recording purportedly involving Akanbi and one Akin Fakorede discussing the property, alleging that Jimoh sent officers due to a vested interest. However, sources familiar with the case state the developers did not have a personal relationship with the officer.

They said several times that they did not know Jimoh when the petition was submitted and that he acted on it without demanding anything. The AIG, who was CP then, did not collect money or land from them.

Jimoh has denied all allegations of corruption and challenged any person with evidence to submit it to the appropriate authorities or to the legal teams involved in ongoing court proceedings. He maintained that the police investigation produced sufficient evidence to warrant a trial and stated that no amount of pressure would prevent him from performing his statutory duties.

Timeline of the Mohbad Investigation

In addition to the property dispute, police sources have rejected claims linking Jimoh to the investigation into the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. While some social media narratives suggested his involvement, sources noted that Mohbad died in 2023, and the subsequent investigations were handled by the Lagos State Coroner’s Court and the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja before Jimoh assumed his role in Lagos.

Jimoh took over as Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, on February 18, 2025, long after the matter had proceeded through the relevant investigative and judicial processes.

He clarified to the public that the police role changes once a matter has been charged to court, emphasizing that he never investigated the Mohbad case nor had any connection with the initial inquiry.
