Nigerian Army Rescues Mrs Abubakar Weeks After Bandit Abduction
The Nigerian Army, with the support of the Nigerian Air Force, has rescued Mrs Amina Abubakar, wife of the late former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar, weeks after she was abducted by bandits alongside her husband. The rescue, announced on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, came amid growing concerns over persistent banditry and insecurity across parts of northern Nigeria.

Contact Made at Tunga Village After Sustained Pressure on Bandits
In a statement, Major General Uba said the rescue followed sustained search-and-rescue operations carried out by troops of Operation Fansan Yamma. Troops intensified offensive operations against criminal elements, mounting pressure that eventually led to contact with the bandits at Tunga Village.
During sustained offensive operations and pressure mounted on the criminal elements, troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village, leading to the successful recovery of Mrs Abubakar.

Bandits Shot Her Before Fleeing Advancing Troops
However, Uba disclosed that Mrs Abubakar sustained gunshot wounds during the operation, with the bandits shooting her before abandoning her and fleeing due to the overwhelming pressure from advancing troops. She was immediately evacuated to a military hospital where she is currently receiving treatment and responding to care. The leadership of the Armed Forces reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring her full recovery and said all necessary support is being provided to her family.
The military spokesman assured that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the abduction and other acts of terror in affected communities.
Troops will continue ongoing operations to track down and neutralise the perpetrators, while intensifying efforts to rid affected communities of terrorists not just in Katsina but in the entire nation.

Rescue Welcome, but Banditry Threat Persists
While the successful rescue has been welcomed, the incident once again highlights the continuing threat posed by bandit groups, many of whom have continued to target communities, travellers and even prominent individuals despite ongoing military operations. Security analysts have repeatedly argued that beyond tactical victories, sustained intelligence gathering, community engagement and improved security coordination remain critical to ending the cycle of kidnappings and violent attacks that have plagued several parts of the country.
