'They threatened to kill me': Content creator alleges police extorted N462,000

Content creator alleges police extortion
A social media content creator, Osasi, has alleged that men he identified as officers of the Nigeria Police Force extorted N462,000 from him through Point of Sale, POS, vendors after stopping him during a routine stop-and-search operation.
The allegation, which was accompanied by screenshots of two bank transfer receipts shared online, has sparked fresh concerns over alleged misconduct by some security personnel and renewed calls for accountability.
In a video posted on social media, Osasi said the incident occurred at about 8 p.m. while he was returning home after helping a friend resolve a faulty MacBook charger. According to him, he had taken his MacBook and charger to his friend's residence after the latter complained that his laptop was no longer charging.

Stop-and-search encounter
On his way home, Osasi alleged that his vehicle was flagged down by men he identified as police officers. He said they asked to search his car and requested his driver's licence, which he provided.

Osasi claimed the officers questioned him about his occupation before demanding access to his mobile phone. He said he told them what he did and asked them to check his social media pages, but they insisted on searching his phone.

Alleged assault and threats
He claimed the situation escalated after he declined to surrender his phone voluntarily. According to him, the officers pushed him into his own car, with one officer driving the vehicle while others sat beside and behind him.

According to him, one of the officers allegedly used a taser on him before forcing him to unlock his phone with Face ID. He claimed they collected the phone, unlocked it with his Face ID and searched through his WhatsApp conversations.

Transfers and public reaction
Osasi further alleged that the officers drove him around for several hours, threatened to kill him and eventually demanded money before allowing him to leave. According to him, the money was transferred to accounts allegedly provided by Point of Sale, POS, operators.
He shared screenshots of two transactions, one showing a transfer of N256,000 made at 9:13 p.m. on July 4, 2026, to an account identified as "JULIET – CHRISJUNIOR ENTERPRISES" with Moniepoint Bank, while another showed a transfer of N206,000 made at 10:05 p.m. the same day to Adejoke Ajewole, also with Moniepoint Bank. The two transfers amounted to N462,000.
They kept threatening me and saying they would kill me. I was alone and genuinely feared for my life. In the end, they forced me to part with my money before I was allowed to go,

Osasi said he eventually regained his freedom and returned home safely before sharing his experience publicly. The video and transaction receipts have since gone viral, prompting widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians calling on the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the allegations and identify those responsible if found culpable.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official response to the allegations. Efforts to obtain comments from the Force Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful.
