Efeyi community in Benue State held a somber mass burial for 16 victims of a dawn attack by suspected armed herdsmen, sparking widespread grief and urgent calls for improved security.

Sixteen coffins lined the Efeyi community in the Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State, on Saturday. The gathering marked a final journey for 16 residents whose lives were cut short in a violent dawn attack. Instead of a celebration of life, the atmosphere was defined by a heavy silence, visible tears, and a palpable sense of anger among the bereaved.
Family members, traditional rulers, political figures, and religious leaders converged at the burial ground to honor the deceased. The weight of the tragedy was evident as mourners carried photographs and memories of those who left home alive but never returned. The ceremony served as a stark reminder of the human cost of the ongoing security challenges in the region.
The victims were reportedly killed during a coordinated assault on July 28. Residents stated that suspected armed herdsmen arrived between 4:00 am and 5:00 am, while the community was still asleep, and opened fire indiscriminately. In the ensuing chaos, homes became sites of terror as residents scrambled for safety in the dark.
When the gunfire finally ceased, 16 individuals lay dead. For the survivors, the memory of that morning—the sound of bullets and the desperate search for cover—remains a traumatic fixture of their daily lives. The attack has significantly deepened existing fears regarding the safety of communities within the Ugboju District.
Among those attending the funeral was Aboyi Owi, whose words reflected the collective frustration of a community that feels abandoned by those sworn to protect it. He characterized the deaths as avoidable and questioned the efficacy of current security measures in preventing such massacres.
The funeral was so touching. The atmosphere is full of sorrow, tears and anger because this was an avoidable death if those responsible to ensure the security of lives and property are alive to their responsibilities.

Owi further expressed skepticism regarding the government's commitment to ending the activities of armed gangs. He emphasized that without genuine intervention, the cycle of violence is likely to continue unabated across the country.
We do not know when our government will take genuine action to end the activities of armed herdsmen in this country. For as long as we allow armed herders to keep tormenting Nigerians, there will be no end to the mass killing of Nigerians by the criminal gangs.

As the Catholic priest led prayers and the coffins were lowered into the earth, the wailing of relatives broke through the solemnity of the event. The burial marks a painful transition for the families involved, who now face a future defined by empty spaces at dinner tables and the haunting silence of homes forever changed by the loss of mothers, fathers, and children.
The tragedy in Efeyi does not exist in isolation, as the district has experienced similar deadly attacks in recent months. The community now remains in a state of uncertainty, wondering if the next gathering will be a celebration or another mass funeral. The primary plea from the survivors is simple: the basic right to remain alive in their own homes.
