Anxiety has gripped Benue State following the abduction of seminarian Kelvin Ochai during a targeted attack on the residence of the Catholic Bishop of Otukpo.

Anxiety has gripped the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Benue State, following the abduction of a seminarian, Mr. Kelvin Ochai, during an attack by gunmen on the residence of the Catholic Bishop of Otukpo Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Apochi.
The Diocese confirmed that the incident occurred late on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Bishop's Residence in Asa III, Otukpo. The attack has thrown the Catholic community into distress and prompted renewed concerns over the growing wave of insecurity affecting religious institutions and communities across the region.
Announcing the incident in a formal statement, the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, appealed to Christians and people of goodwill to pray fervently for the safe return of the abducted seminarian. According to the statement, Bishop Apochi expressed profound sadness over the incident while urging members of the Diocese not to lose hope.

The Bishop also assured parishioners that efforts were being intensified to secure the freedom of Mr. Kelvin Ochai. Beyond the plight of the abducted seminarian, the Diocese extended its prayers to other Nigerians currently being held by kidnappers, describing the situation as one requiring collective faith and compassion.

The abduction has left members of the Catholic faithful in Otukpo worried, with many expressing hope that the seminarian would return safely to continue his journey towards the priesthood. Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command has confirmed the incident. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, stated that investigations have commenced into the abduction. He assured the public that security agencies are working to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack and are making concerted efforts to secure the victim's release.
