Rivers Police detain officers over alleged killing of 22-year-old Anthony Obodo

Investigation into Fatal Shooting
The Rivers State Police Command has detained officers allegedly involved in a shooting incident that resulted in the death of 22-year-old Anthony Obodo in Port Harcourt. The command has formally commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy, which occurred at the Agip Junction/Ada George axis of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area on Thursday evening.
Police Public Relations Officer Blessing Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, confirmed the detention of the personnel involved. She stated that the officers had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and would face disciplinary action if found culpable for the young man’s death.
Eyewitness Reports and Public Outcry
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred around 5:00 pm when a police team stationed at the junction flagged down Obodo’s vehicle. When the driver allegedly failed to stop, an officer opened fire on the car. The gunfire not only killed Obodo but also caused his vehicle to lose control, injuring two passers-by in the process.
Reports indicate that the shooting sparked immediate pandemonium, with local youths confronting the officers involved. One source alleged that the officer fired three bullets from behind, one of which penetrated Obodo’s chest. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, while the condition of the injured bystanders remains uncertain.
Conflicting Accounts of the Scuffle
The police command provided a preliminary account that differs from some eyewitness reports. While social media footage captured the aftermath, the command suggested an altercation had taken place between the victim and the officers prior to the discharge of the firearm.
Preliminary information indicates that on 27th August 2026, there was an altercation between the occupant, one Anthony Obodo (m) and there was a scuffle between duo which led to gun shoot and subsequently led to the death of the victim, in which two other passers-by were injured.

Commitment to Professional Standards
In the wake of the incident, the Rivers State Police Command has condemned the conduct of the officers involved. The command emphasized that the use of firearms must meet professional policing standards and that unethical behavior will not be shielded by the institution.
The Command wishes to state unequivocally that the action is totally condemnable and does not reflect professionalism in policing and will not relent to carry out strict disciplinary actions against erring police officers.
