The Nigeria Police Force has arrested five suspects in connection with the murder of a community leader in Anambra State, who was allegedly incapacitated with a restricted veterinary sedative following a land dispute. The investigation highlights a conspiracy involving the misuse of controlled substances and a disagreement over N39 million in community development funds.

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of five suspects linked to the murder of Emmanuel Nwanneniya, the former Chairman and land agent of the Ikem Nando Community in Anambra State. Investigators revealed that a restricted veterinary sedative, identified as S.P.L. Ketamine Hydrochloride 500mg/10ml, was allegedly used to incapacitate the victim before his death.
The arrests followed weeks of intensive intelligence gathering, digital surveillance, and coordinated tactical operations by the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad (STS). Addressing journalists in Abuja, the Coordinator of the STS, ACP Victor Ogbeide Godfrey, described the operation as a major success for intelligence-led policing, attributing the breakthrough to the operational resources provided by the Inspector-General of Police.
According to police investigations, the murder was rooted in a protracted dispute over the management of proceeds from the sale of community land in Ikem Nando. The investigation found that approximately N39 million had been shared among three clans, with the majority of the community resolving to invest the funds into the construction of a community hall and other developmental projects.
However, a faction within the community allegedly opposed this decision, leading to prolonged hostility and threats against those supporting the projects. Police reported that several elders and community leaders had previously been targeted for intimidation. While some suspects had been invited for questioning regarding these threats earlier, the hostility eventually escalated into the fatal plot against Nwanneniya.
Investigators alleged that the suspects devised a plan to lure Nwanneniya to a meeting under the pretext of discussing a large land purchase. Believing he was meeting genuine buyers, the victim honored the invitation. Upon arrival at the meeting point, he was reportedly overpowered at gunpoint, restrained, and injected several times with the restricted veterinary sedative. The suspects then allegedly forced him to surrender access to his mobile phone and banking applications.
A breakthrough in the case came from the victim’s wife, who informed investigators that her husband had left home specifically to inspect land with prospective buyers. When he failed to return or answer his phone, she drove to the agreed location and discovered him lying motionless. This testimony, alongside digital evidence and intelligence analysis, allowed the STS to trace and apprehend the suspects.
During the parade of suspects, members of the Ikem Nando community recounted months of living under threat. Chief Ejimofor, a community leader, stated that he had previously reported kidnapping threats to the police because of his support for the land-use decision. Similarly, Community Youth Leader Ikechukwu Onagor raised concerns regarding the death of his brother under related circumstances, urging the police to investigate if that case was linked to the broader conspiracy.
Expressing concern over the accessibility of the drugs used in the crime, ACP Godfrey called for stricter interventions from national regulatory bodies regarding controlled substances.
We are concerned about the alleged ease with which this restricted veterinary sedative was obtained. We call on NAFDAC and other relevant regulatory agencies to strengthen oversight of controlled substances to prevent them from falling into criminal hands.
— ACP Victor Ogbeide Godfrey, Coordinator of the Special Tactical Squad, Nigeria Police Force
The Nigeria Police Force has assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify all individuals connected to the conspiracy. The Force reiterated that while substantial evidence has been uncovered, all suspects remain presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
