A disagreement over a girl at a burial party following Ogute-Oke community's annual Olimi festival in Edo State escalated into a fatal cutlass attack and reprisal arson, leaving one man dead, seven houses destroyed and an entire community in mourning.
Festival Joy Turns to Grief as Disagreement Ends in Death and Arson
What began as a joyous celebration in Ogute-Oke community, Estako East Local Government Area of Edo State, has ended in sorrow after a disagreement involving a young woman reportedly escalated into a deadly attack and a wave of reprisal violence. A man was allegedly matcheted to death while seven houses were set ablaze following an incident that occurred shortly after residents celebrated the community's annual Olimi festival.
A Burial Party, a Dance and a Fatal Misunderstanding
Residents said the tragedy unfolded during a burial party when a misunderstanding developed between two men over a girl. Sources said the deceased had reportedly been making advances to the girl in the presence of her fiancé, creating tension between the parties. The situation escalated when one of the men became upset after seeing another man dancing with the girl he had brought to the event.

What started as a disagreement soon turned violent. The suspect was said to have left the scene, retrieved a cutlass and returned - attacking a man not directly connected to the original quarrel.
Commissioner Confirms Death, Describes Killing as Avoidable
Confirming the incident, Edo State Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Godwin Eshiehie, who hails from the community, described the development as unfortunate and avoidable.
They were celebrating. In the process, a guy was engaging a girl, another guy came from behind to start dancing. They have issues and one went to get cutlass. He used the cutlass on another person not connected to their quarrel. They took the injured guy to the hospital and he was confirmed dead.

The killing triggered outrage within the community, leading to reprisal attacks by relatives and sympathisers of the deceased that left seven houses destroyed and forced affected families to flee. Several persons - including the suspected attacker and the girl at the centre of the disagreement - were said to have fled the community amid fears of arrest and possible retaliation. Community elders have since intervened to restore calm and prevent further violence.
The families of the deceased carried out reprisal attacks and burnt houses. There was no quarrel that warranted the cutlass. Our elders have calmed down the situation.

Police Yet to Comment, Community Awaits Justice
Efforts to obtain comments from Edo Police Command spokesman, Eno Ikoedem, were unsuccessful as he could not be reached at the time of filing this report. For many in Ogute-Oke, the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of how quickly unchecked anger can transform moments of celebration into scenes of grief, loss and devastation - leaving behind a community that gathered to honour its cultural heritage and instead found itself counting the dead and the destroyed.
