Abductors have demanded a N50 million ransom for the release of Ibi Bemdoo Philip, a Benue State University graduate, and several others kidnapped while traveling to an NYSC orientation camp in Ondo State.

A fresh security scare has hit the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation exercise following the reported abduction of Ibi Bemdoo Philip, a graduate of Benue State University, and other passengers. Philip, who recently completed his studies in Mass Communication, was traveling to Ondo State to participate in the mandatory orientation exercise when the incident occurred.
Philip reportedly departed Benue State approximately two days ago aboard a vehicle operated by Benue Links Nig. Ltd. Concerns grew among his family and colleagues when he became unreachable shortly after the journey began. The situation was confirmed as a kidnapping on Friday morning when Philip established contact with his Course Representative using a telephone number belonging to the alleged abductors.
During the brief communication with his Course Representative, Philip revealed that he and several other passengers had been intercepted and taken into custody by unidentified gunmen. The abductors have reportedly placed a N50 million ransom demand on the victims, though it remains unclear if this figure covers all passengers or is specific to the graduate.
The exact circumstances of the abduction, including the precise geographical location where the vehicle was stopped and the total number of persons currently held, have not been established. This lack of detailed information has added to the distress of the families involved as they wait for official updates from security agencies.
In response to the development, family members, friends, and colleagues of Philip have launched an urgent appeal for government intervention. They have specifically called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigerian Army to treat the rescue of the victims as a matter of national emergency.
Supporters of the victims are urging the authorities to activate all necessary intelligence and tactical mechanisms to locate the kidnappers' hideout. The goal is to prevent any further harm to the youth corps member and his fellow travelers, ensuring their safe return before the situation deteriorates further.
This incident has brought renewed scrutiny to the safety of young Nigerians who must travel long distances across the country to serve in the NYSC program. The route traveled by Benue Links vehicles has seen previous security challenges; in April 2026, passengers on the same line were abducted along the Makurdi-Otukpo road before being rescued by security forces.
At the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Nigeria Police Force, the NYSC management, or the management of Benue Links Nig. Ltd. confirming the ransom demand or the current status of the rescue operation. For the loved ones of Ibi Bemdoo Philip, the situation remains a desperate race against time as they look to the state to protect its citizens.
