Enhancing Waterway Safety Through Collaboration

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its collaboration with the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB). This strategic move is designed to improve safety standards and significantly reduce the frequency of boat accidents across the country’s extensive inland waterways.

The Acting Managing Director of NIWA, Malam Umar Yusuf Girei, provided this assurance on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the Director General of NSIB, Captain Alex Sabundu Badeh Jnr, to the NIWA Headquarters in Lokoja, Kogi State. The meeting underscored the urgent need for inter-agency cooperation in managing Nigeria’s maritime transport sector.

NIWA is dedicated to strengthening partnerships with sister agencies to improve safety standards and enforce regulations for safer water transportation in Nigeria.

Strategic Focus on Prevention and Regulation

The partnership between the two agencies will focus on key areas including information sharing, joint operations, and the implementation of stricter safety regulations. According to NIWA leadership, effective cooperation among relevant stakeholders remains the most critical factor in ensuring safer navigation and the protection of lives and property on the water.

The initiative aims to address the persistent challenge of boat mishaps which have plagued various regions of the country. By aligning their operational goals, both NIWA and NSIB hope to create a more robust framework for waterway management that prioritizes passenger safety and cargo security.

Technical Support for Accident Investigations

Beyond immediate safety enforcement, the collaboration extends to the technical aspects of marine incident management. The Acting Managing Director assured the NSIB delegation of NIWA’s readiness to provide necessary information and operational support to facilitate thorough investigations.

This support is expected to help NSIB conduct timely investigations into marine accidents, allowing for the development of evidence-based preventive measures. Earlier in the meeting, Captain Badeh noted that the visit was specifically aimed at exploring further areas of collaboration in accident investigation, data sharing, and the establishment of enhanced safety standards.
