NIWA intensifies marine safety campaign to protect lives on Abaji waterways

Response to Rising Water Levels

As the rainy season reaches its peak, leading to rising water levels and increased pollution, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has initiated a sensitization drive for waterfront communities. The campaign, led by the NIWA Abuja Area/Liaison Office, focuses on safeguarding lives and protecting the environment along the waterways of the Federal Capital Territory.

The exercise re-emphasized safe navigation practices and environmental stewardship for residents living on and around the waterways. This proactive measure aims to mitigate the risks associated with the current weather conditions, ensuring that those dependent on the waterways can operate safely and sustainably.

Commitment to Zero Tolerance Policy

The campaign is in direct alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. It specifically addresses the provisions of federal law which mandate strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent maritime mishaps, enshrining a policy of zero tolerance for waterways transportation accidents and infractions.

Speaking at the event in Abaji Area Council, the Area Manager, Hajai. Aisha Eri, expressed gratitude to the host communities for their continued cooperation. She assured residents of NIWA’s sustained commitment to protecting the nation’s inland waters and the livelihoods of those who depend on them.

Traditional Leadership and Local Compliance

The Emir of Kwali, HRH Alhaji Adamu Saba Aguma, commended the authority for the timely intervention. The traditional ruler pledged his community’s full support to safeguard the waterways and ensure that all residents strictly follow safety regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies.

Several district heads also voiced their appreciation for the enlightenment campaign. These include John Dogole (District Head of Kundu), Mohammed Yusuf (Sarkin Tungbufu), Ayahaya Nassarawa (Sarkin Nassarawa), Musa Wabai (Sarkin Kutara), Musa Alanana (Sarkin Kwago and Padama), and Abdullahi Kwakwa (Sarkin Kwakwa). These local leaders provided assurances of full compliance with the safety measures introduced during the session.

Implementation of National Maritime Directives

This sensitization effort is part of a broader nationwide mandate from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola. The directive calls for regular and dedicated engagement with littoral communities across the country to improve safety standards and environmental health.

The Acting Managing Director of NIWA, Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, has instructed all Area Offices to prioritize these engagements. Following the successful event in Abaji, the Abuja Area Office team is scheduled to extend the campaign to other littoral communities within and around the Federal Capital Territory in the coming week.
