Strengthening Ties for Asymmetric Warfare

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has called for stronger collaboration between the military and the media to effectively confront Nigeria’s evolving security challenges. Musa described the media as a critical partner in the fight against asymmetric warfare, noting that accurate and timely information remains essential to strengthening public confidence in the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The Minister made these remarks on Wednesday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the executive members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN). Led by their President, Mr. Odita Sunday, the delegation discussed the intersection of journalism and national security. Musa emphasized that the military requires the media more than ever given the complex nature of the country's current security environment.

The military really needs the media at this period of asymmetric warfare. My office will continue to maintain an open-door policy to foster a cordial relationship with the media and ensure the dissemination of accurate information to the public.

Commitment to Transparency and Professionalism

General Musa assured the association that the Ministry of Defence would carefully evaluate the proposals presented by DECAN, with an immediate focus on addressing feasible requests. This open communication strategy is intended to ensure Nigerians are properly informed on sensitive defence and security matters while bridging the gap between the military and the civilian population.

However, the Minister also urged defence correspondents to uphold the highest principles of fairness, balance, and professionalism in their reportage. He highlighted that responsible journalism is not just a professional requirement but a pillar of national security. He noted that maintaining public trust is dependent on the integrity of the information shared by those covering the front lines of defense.

We encourage defence correspondents to remain fair, balanced and professional in their reportage, as responsible journalism is vital to national security and public trust.
