Selection process and programme structure

She disclosed that the competition attracted 1,429 applications from 47 African countries, with only 50 participants eventually selected for the intensive learning programme.

Providing a breakdown of the selected participants, she said seven were from Nigeria, five each from Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire, three from Ethiopia, while the remaining participants came from several other African countries.

She noted that the programme involved 12 weeks of intensive learning and practical work before the final winners were announced. Additional statistics released at the programme's grand finale on Tuesday showed that out of the 1,429 applications received, 1,099 were initially adjudged eligible after entries at the idea stage were screened out.

The organisers engaged 19 independent experts who conducted a total of 2,846 blind evaluations before selecting the final 50 participants for the fellowship. The programme, organised and managed by Pitch Palabre in Dakar, Senegal, was conducted in both English and French, reflecting its pan-African outlook and accommodating participants from Anglophone and Francophone countries.

Participation, completion and venture progress

According to the organisers, 44 per cent of the 50 participants selected for the programme were women, exceeding the UNDP's target of between 35 and 40 per cent female representation.

Of the 50 participants admitted into the programme, 48 completed the 12-week training, while two dropped out due to the demanding nature of the programme.

The statistics further revealed that all participants had developed Minimum Viable Products, MVPs, 60 per cent had reached the active product stage, while 64 per cent were already generating revenue from their ventures.

Before the final pitch session, the top 20 participants were shortlisted, with four Nigerians making the cut. The finalists were each given three minutes to pitch their innovations before a panel of judges and investors. Participants were isolated in waiting rooms and only called in individually for their presentations.

Final results and prize winners

At the end of the competition, Chioma Ifeanyi-Eze from Nigeria emerged as the overall winner, receiving the grand prize of $10,000.

A female participant from Egypt finished second to receive $5,000, while a male participant from Côte d'Ivoire placed third and won $3,000.

The remaining winners came from Tunisia, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Mauritius and Côte d'Ivoire, with those placed fourth to tenth receiving prizes of $1,000 each. Another Nigerian finished sixth.
