Lagos Police Investigate Chinese national over alleged attempted sexual assault

Allegations of Sexual Harassment and Assault

The Lagos State Police Command has detained a Chinese national, Bai Quang, over allegations of sexual assault and repeated unwanted sexual advances towards his male Nigerian employee, Mr. Charles Nwafor. The suspect was arrested following a petition by Nwafor, who alleged that Bai targeted him with persistent sexual overtures and physically assaulted him after those advances were rejected.

According to a police source, the alleged assault occurred when the suspect pulled down Nwafor’s trousers and touched his private parts. The situation reportedly escalated when the suspect lured the complainant to a hotel under the guise of a business transaction, where he allegedly attempted to force him into unwanted sexual acts.

The advances were allegedly made against Nwafor’s consent and were repeatedly rejected by the complainant. The suspect allegedly sexually assaulted Nwafor by pulling down his trousers and touching his private parts, among other alleged amorous acts.

Termination of Employment and Police Intervention

The victim further alleged that the attempted assault at the hotel was unsuccessful, prompting him to report the matter to the authorities. Following the incident, the suspect reportedly resorted to intimidation tactics and terminated the complainant’s employment as a consequence of his refusal to comply with the demands.

Upon receiving the petition, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Tijani, directed that the case be transferred from the Hausa Police Station to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba. The investigation is currently being handled by the Diplomatic/Foreign Nationals Section of the SCID, under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr. Dayo Akinbisehin.

Diplomatic Protocols and Structural Reforms

In accordance with diplomatic procedures involving foreign nationals, the Chinese Embassy is being notified of the arrest and detention of the suspect. Investigators are currently working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the allegations to determine the appropriate legal actions. The suspect remains in custody as the probe continues.

This development follows the recent decentralization of investigations at the SCID into specialized units by the command under CP Tijani. This restructuring was designed to strengthen the command’s response to emerging crimes and improve the handling of specialized cases. Under this arrangement, the Diplomatic/Foreign Nationals Crimes Section handles criminal cases involving non-Nigerians to enhance coordination and synergy with respective embassies in Nigeria.
