Lagos Police commission new VCRU base, receive five operational vehicles to boost crime response

Commissioning of the VCRU base
The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday strengthened its operational capacity against violent crimes with the commissioning of a newly renovated Operational Base of the Violent Crime Response Unit and the delivery of additional operational vehicles and logistics from the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund.

The event was held at the VCRU Operational Base at Ijora Olopa Oto Road, behind the LAWMA Office in Lagos. During the ceremony, the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, commissioned the facility and received five operational vehicles, 1,200 raincoats and 1,000 pairs of operational boots for policing operations across the state.
The Command said the donated equipment is expected to improve the operational readiness, safety and welfare of police personnel while strengthening its capacity to respond swiftly to security threats.
Police outline expected impact
Speaking at the ceremony, CP Tijani Fatai said effective policing can only thrive through sustained collaboration among government, security stakeholders and the public. He reaffirmed the Command's commitment to intelligence-led, technology-driven and proactive policing strategies aimed at preventing crime, protecting lives and property, and maintaining law and order throughout Lagos State.

According to him, the newly renovated VCRU operational base and the additional logistics will significantly improve the Command's response to emerging security challenges.

He added that the Command would continue to deploy proactive and intelligence-driven strategies to combat crime and improve public safety across the state.
Appreciation to government and residents
The police commissioner expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State Security Trust Fund for their continued investment in strengthening policing infrastructure and operational capacity in the state.
He also commended Lagos residents for their cooperation and confidence in the police, assuring them that the Command would remain resolute in its efforts to make the state safer for all.
The Command said the continued strengthening of the VCRU underscores the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to enhancing public safety through operational readiness and strategic crime-fighting initiatives.
Role of the Violent Crime Response Unit
The Violent Crime Response Unit is one of the strategic initiatives of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, established to strengthen proactive policing against violent crimes and other criminal activities in Lagos.
The specialised tactical unit serves as an operational backup for rapid deployment to high-risk incidents requiring swift intervention, intelligence-led operations, coordinated enforcement actions and effective response to violent crimes.
Among dignitaries at the event were the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan; the Ojora of Ijora Kingdom, HRH Oba AbdulFatai Aromire; Aare Onikoyi of Yorubaland, Aare Tomori Williams; Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, Engr. Olalekan Adigun; President and Founder of the Social Intervention Advocacy Foundation, Dr. Segun Awosanya; and Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee, Lagos State Command, Apostle Kehinde Sowemimo, alongside Area Commanders, senior police officers, community leaders and other security stakeholders.
