How Brazil-Based Businessman's Homecoming Ended at Lagos Airport
A 41-year-old businessman who claimed he flew home from São Paulo to visit his family was arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport after NDLEA operatives allegedly found 6.10kg of liquid cocaine soaked into shirts and towels in his luggage.

Homecoming in Handcuffs: NDLEA Arrests Brazil-Based Suspect at Lagos Airport
What was meant to be a homecoming reunion with his family ended instead in handcuffs. For 41-year-old Abugu Oliver Ikechukwu, a businessman who claimed to have spent more than 14 years building a life in São Paulo, Brazil, the journey back to Nigeria took an unexpected and dramatic turn when operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, arrested him at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

The suspect, who told investigators he operates an African restaurant in Brazil and had travelled home to see his wife and purchase food supplies for his business, allegedly arrived carrying luggage that appeared ordinary on the surface. But according to the NDLEA, beneath the neatly packed contents lay a sophisticated attempt to smuggle hard drugs into the country.
A thorough search of his baggage uncovered 14 shirts and towels allegedly soaked in liquid cocaine, carefully dried and ironed to avoid suspicion.

The discovery led to the recovery of 6.10 kilograms of cocaine concealed within the fabrics. The arrest has once again exposed the increasingly sophisticated methods employed by international drug trafficking networks and the devastating consequences that follow when individuals become entangled in the illicit trade.
A Week of Nationwide Arrests Across All Demographics
The airport arrest was only one among a string of operations carried out across the country in the past week. In Abia State, a 60-year-old woman, Chidimma Sunday, was taken into custody after allegedly being found with 1.8 kilograms of skunk. In Rivers State, 28-year-old Abubakar Usman - a person living with disability - was arrested with various illicit substances including skunk, methamphetamine, tramadol, swinol and diazepam. The arrests paint a troubling picture of a trade that increasingly draws people from different walks of life into its web.

Gas Cylinders, Warehouses and Market Areas: The Scale of Seizures
In Delta State, operatives uncovered 2.8 kilograms of Loud concealed inside gas cylinders. In Kwara State, officers intercepted a vehicle carrying 304 kilograms of compressed cannabis. One of the most significant seizures occurred in Taraba State, where NDLEA officers acting on intelligence raided a warehouse and recovered a staggering 1,121.5 kilograms of cannabis sativa packed in 63 jumbo bags. Another 1,102 kilograms of Ghana Loud was recovered around the Alaba International Market area of Lagos, underscoring the scale of the illegal drug market authorities continue to battle.

WADA Campaign Runs Alongside Enforcement Operations
Recognising that arrests alone cannot solve the problem, the NDLEA has continued its War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, campaign across schools, communities, traditional institutions and places of worship. During the past week, the agency conducted sensitisation programmes in Nasarawa, Enugu, Lagos, Kano and Anambra States, while engaging traditional rulers and community leaders in prevention advocacy.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers involved in the various operations, praising their commitment to both drug supply reduction and public enlightenment campaigns, and urging them to sustain the momentum. As investigations continue into the airport arrest and other cases across the country, the incidents serve as a stark reminder that behind every drug seizure is a story of choices, consequences and lives hanging in the balance.
