The Oyo State Government and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria are set to host a week-long celebration for World Pharmacists Day 2026, focusing on medication safety and public health innovation.

The Oyo State Government, in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), is set to mobilise key stakeholders in the health sector for a week-long celebration of the 2026 World Pharmacists Day. Governor Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, PSN President Pharm. Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim, and several other high-profile dignitaries are expected to attend the event.
Scheduled for September 19 to 27, 2026, the programme will focus on strengthening the role of pharmacists in healthcare delivery, medication safety, primary healthcare, and public health innovation. Under the theme, “Empowering Pharmacist for a Healthier Future,” the event aims to bring together government officials, industry leaders, policymakers, and regulators to discuss the future of the profession.
World Pharmacists Day is our opportunity to celebrate and make visible the profession’s contributions to better health outcomes.
— Adebayo Olukayode Gbadamosi, Chairman, World Pharmacists’ Day 2026 Planning Committee
The Host and Chairman of the PSN Oyo State Branch, Pharm. (Col.) Victor Segun Ajanaku (rtd), stated that the chosen theme reflects a deep commitment to professional excellence and improved patient care. He characterized pharmacists as essential partners in the healthcare system, noting that strengthening their competencies is vital to improving how medicines are prescribed and managed across communities.
Adding to this perspective, PSN President Pharm. Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim called for stronger policies and increased investment to enable pharmacists to play a more integrated role in healthcare. Echoing the position of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), Ibrahim urged stakeholders, including health insurers and regulators, to support the full integration of pharmacists into broader health systems.
Keynote speaker Pharm. Lekan Asuni, Managing Director of Lefas Pharmaceutical, highlighted that the changing healthcare environment requires pharmacists to move beyond traditional medicine supply roles. He noted that pharmacists are increasingly relied upon for health information, wellness management, and clinical guidance due to their accessibility and extensive knowledge base.
Asuni identified several critical areas where pharmacists can make a greater impact, including antimicrobial stewardship, pharmacovigilance, and chronic disease management. However, he emphasized the need for appropriate financing and remuneration mechanisms for pharmacists providing specialized services like vaccinations, screenings, and structured health education.
Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to attend the festivities alongside the First Lady of Oyo State, Her Excellency Tamunominini Makinde, who will serve as the Special Guest of Honour. The governor has reaffirmed his administration's support for the profession, describing pharmacists as critical custodians of medicine who are essential to drug safety and supply-chain management.
The week-long programme will feature various activities across designated venues in Oyo State, culminating in a red-carpet Awards Night on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The event will be chaired by Engr. (Chief) O. O. Oyetade, with special contributions expected from Pharm. (Chief) Rahamon Jimoh Bioku, Founder of BIORAJ Pharmaceutical. CEOAFRICA will serve as the official media partner for the duration of the landmark event.
