Trailer Plunges From Nkpor Flyover, Crushes Four Vehicles Below
A routine Saturday afternoon at the busy Nkpor flyover in Anambra State turned into a scene of terror and thanksgiving when a 40-foot trailer plunged from the bridge, crushing four vehicles beneath and leaving at least five people injured. The accident, which occurred at the bustling commercial corridor linking Onitsha and surrounding communities, has once again brought to the fore concerns over the safety of articulated vehicles on Nigerian roads and the devastating impact of mechanical failures on innocent road users.
The Fowl That Saved a Life
For Amaechi Eze, a shuttle bus driver from Ukehe in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, Saturday's incident was a chilling reminder of how quickly life can change. Just moments before the trailer came crashing down from the flyover, Eze had stepped away from his vehicle to rescue a small fowl that had fallen into a drainage channel. That seemingly insignificant act would ultimately save his life.
I entered the drainage to rescue the small fowl because it was crying. While I was there, I suddenly heard a loud sound. Before I knew what was happening, the trailer had fallen from the bridge and landed on top of the vehicles, including my bus. I narrowly escaped death. If I had remained inside the vehicle or even stood beside it, I would not be alive today. God used that small fowl to save me.
— Amaechi Eze, Commercial Driver
Eyewitnesses: "The Sound Was Like an Explosion"
The accident drew crowds of shocked residents, traders and commuters who watched rescue workers struggle to manage the aftermath. Eyewitnesses said the trailer was ascending the Nkpor flyover when the driver allegedly lost control, causing the heavy-duty vehicle to veer off the bridge and plunge onto vehicles travelling and loading passengers beneath. Among the vehicles affected were two commercial shuttle buses, an Audi Volkswagen car and another trailer.
It happened within seconds. Some people were lucky because they had just stepped out of the buses. Others sustained injuries from the impact and flying debris.

FRSC Confirms Brake Failure, Six Persons Involved
Confirming the crash, the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Anambra State Command, Margaret Onabe, said the agency received a distress call at about 1:10 p.m. and deployed a rescue team from RS5.31A Upper Iweka Outpost, which arrived within five minutes. She identified the affected vehicles as a Mercedes-Benz articulated truck with registration number FTD581XA, two commercial shuttle buses and an Audi Volkswagen car.
A total of six male adults were involved in the crash. Two male adults sustained minor injuries, while four persons escaped unhurt. No fatality was recorded.
— Margaret Onabe, Sector Public Education Officer, FRSC Anambra
Onabe said preliminary investigations pointed to brake failure as the likely cause of the accident. A heavy-duty tow truck was deployed to remove the wreckage and restore traffic flow. Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, urged motorists - particularly operators of articulated vehicles - to prioritise routine maintenance and ensure braking systems are in proper working condition before embarking on journeys.
Grateful to Be Alive, But a Livelihood Lost
Standing beside the remains of his badly damaged shuttle bus, Eze alternated between gratitude and despair. While thankful for his life, he lamented the destruction of the vehicle that served as his primary source of income and appealed to kind-hearted Nigerians for support.
My vehicle is damaged beyond repair. This is what I use to feed my family. I am appealing to kind-hearted Nigerians and concerned citizens to come to my aid.
— Amaechi Eze
For many residents, the most enduring image from the tragedy remains Eze's survival story. In a matter of seconds, a simple act of compassion towards a helpless bird became the difference between life and death - and amid the wreckage beneath the Nkpor flyover, that unlikely miracle became the story many will remember long after the traffic resumed and the crowds dispersed.
