A Vision for Sustainable Living

In a global environment where food waste is often viewed as an unavoidable consequence of modern life, Roberta Edu identifies untapped potential. Where others see discarded leftovers, she sees clean energy; and where some see agriculture as merely a source of food, she sees a pathway to healthier families and thriving businesses. As a technology expert, homesteader, and mentor, Edu has dedicated her career to creating practical solutions for Africa's food and environmental challenges.

For Edu, sustainability is a daily commitment reflected in her family’s lifestyle. From growing food at home to raising chickens and teaching her children the importance of responsible production, she believes that meaningful change begins with individual choices. This philosophy serves as the foundation for both her domestic life and her professional ventures, centering on the creation of value from resources that are frequently overlooked.

I intentionally build a lifestyle centred around creating value from what many people overlook,

— Roberta Edu, Founder, Moppet Foods

Innovation Through Moppet Foods

This commitment to sustainability led to the founding of Moppet Foods, a company dedicated to producing nutritious food while reducing environmental impact. Under Edu’s leadership, the organization has developed award-winning innovations designed to improve nutrition, reduce post-harvest losses, and support smallholder farmers. The company’s operations also prioritize social impact by creating employment opportunities for women and young people, making healthy nutrition more accessible to families.

One of the company's most significant technical achievements is a waste-to-biogas system. This initiative converts food waste into clean cooking gas for household use, demonstrating how innovation can transform environmental liabilities into sustainable assets. By proving that waste is simply an opportunity waiting to be rediscovered, Edu has earned the confidence of regulatory agencies, development organizations, and health institutions across the sector.

Empowering African Entrepreneurs

Edu’s vision extends beyond the success of her own brand. She is active in helping other African entrepreneurs overcome the structural barriers that often prevent promising businesses from scaling. Through mentorship and consultancy, she provides guidance on the technical and administrative aspects of the food industry, ensuring that local businesses are equipped to compete.

Key areas of her consultancy and mentorship include: - Regulatory compliance and product development - Food manufacturing systems and sustainability integration - Factory readiness and market access - Business growth strategies for emerging food brands

Whether working with established manufacturers or individuals in shared production facilities, she maintains that African entrepreneurs must have access to practical knowledge. This support helps transform great ideas into lasting businesses that can navigate the complexities of manufacturing and market entry.

A Legacy of Purposeful Leadership

Beyond her business activities, Edu continues to inspire through the transparent sharing of her homesteading journey and sustainable food production techniques. Her story serves as a reminder that entrepreneurship is a tool for solving systemic problems and leaving communities better than they were found. Her work addresses critical issues including food insecurity, unemployment, and environmental degradation through a lens of purpose-driven innovation.

As Africa seeks sustainable pathways for development, the efforts of innovators like Roberta Edu demonstrate that business growth and environmental stewardship can coexist. Her recognition as the Naija Chronoscope Entrepreneur of the Week celebrates the impact of leaders whose actions shape a more sustainable and hopeful future for the continent.
