The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspects following the fatal mob attack on Basit Kolade, a groom-to-be who was killed on Lagos Island just weeks before his wedding. The incident, sparked by a minor traffic collision, has reignited concerns over the prevalence of jungle justice in the state.

The Lagos State Police Command has taken four individuals into custody following the alleged mob killing of Basit Kolade, who was beaten to death by a group of men on Lagos Island. The victim had recently returned to Nigeria to prepare for his wedding, which was scheduled to take place later this month.
The incident occurred on September 2, 2026, near Freeman Street, following a traffic disagreement. Kolade was reportedly driving a black Lexus Jeep with registration number KSF 115 JZ, accompanied by a woman identified as Ayanda, when a motorcycle collided with the rear of his vehicle. The confrontation escalated when Kolade demanded an explanation for the collision.
In the process, Basit allegedly reversed the vehicle and hit the motorcycle, causing the rider and the motorcycle to fall.

Following the secondary collision involving the motorcycle, a group of men reportedly emerged from the surrounding area and launched a violent attack on Kolade using dangerous weapons. While Ayanda was rescued by local women at the scene, Kolade was subjected to a severe beating by the mob.
Emergency responders rushed Kolade to the Lagos Island General Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was later confirmed dead. The victim's death has drawn significant attention due to its timing, occurring just weeks before his planned marriage ceremony.
SP Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that four suspects are currently being held in connection with the killing. The Lagos State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the circumstances of the attack and is working to identify other participants in the mob action. The command has used the opportunity to strongly condemn the resort to self-help and informal justice systems.
The Command strongly condemns the incident and warns members of the public against resorting to mob action, jungle justice, or any form of self-help. No individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands. Anyone found culpable in the attack, including those who participated in the alleged mob action, will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The police have urged the public to allow formal law enforcement agencies to handle disputes and suspected criminal activities. They emphasized that anyone found participating in mob attacks will face criminal prosecution, as the command seeks to curb the rise of extrajudicial violence in the state.
