Residents of the Mercyland community in Ikorodu are abandoning their homes following a series of brutal armed robberies and the murder of a prominent community leader.

Residents of the Mercyland (Jabe CDA) community in the Ijede area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, are living in a state of heightened fear following a series of violent armed robbery attacks. The surge in criminality has led many families to abandon their homes, seeking safety elsewhere after the most recent operation resulted in the death of a community leader and left several others injured.
The community has issued an urgent appeal for intervention to the Lagos State Government, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Commissioner of Police for the Lagos State Command. The residents are demanding increased security presence and a thorough investigation into the killing of Mr. Abdulazeez Olaoye T.A., a prominent executive of the Community Development Association (CDA).

The latest incident occurred between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Sunday, July 12th, when assailants reportedly invaded approximately seven houses. During the operation, Mr. Olaoye was brutally attacked with machetes, leading to his death. The robbers systematically moved through the neighborhood, forcing entry into homes and carting away millions of naira and other personal valuables.
According to witnesses, the attackers demonstrated a high level of determination, even destroying surveillance equipment to avoid detection. In one instance, a resident who had installed a CCTV system saw the device destroyed before the robbers used force to gain entry after failed attempts to break in through a window.

The robbers damaged the CCTV camera, forced the door open and made away with valuables. They attempted to strike the owner on the head with a machete, but he raised his hand to protect himself. One of his fingers was severely cut and later stitched.

This latest tragedy marks the sixth armed robbery attack recorded in the community since January. The frequency and brutality of these incidents have shattered the peace of the neighborhood. Reports indicate that in previous attacks, the violence included sexual assault and severe physical injuries inflicted on residents who attempted to protect their property.
There are also troubling indications that the killing of the CDA executive may have been targeted. Information shared by neighbors suggests that Mr. Olaoye had expressed concerns about his safety in the weeks leading up to the fatal encounter. He had reportedly been threatened by unidentified individuals shortly before he was murdered.

About two weeks before the attack, the deceased reportedly told some people that he and another person had been threatened by unknown individuals and that he feared for his life. A few days later, he was brutally attacked.

As the insecurity persists, the once-peaceful 3rd Power Line and Oke Eletu axis of Ikorodu is seeing a steady decline in occupancy. Residents who remain in the area describe a life of constant vigilance and sleepless nights, fearing that they may be the next victims of the roaming gangs.
The community is calling on the Lagos State Command to intensify patrols and ensure that the perpetrators of the recent killing and robberies are brought to justice. Without a decisive security response, locals fear the community will be completely deserted by those seeking to protect their lives.

We are begging the Lagos State Government, the Commissioner of Police and the Inspector-General of Police to save our community. Residents can no longer sleep with both eyes closed. People are leaving because they no longer feel safe.
