Domestic dispute turns fatal

What began as a domestic disagreement ended in tragedy in Nasarawa State, where a 20-year-old woman allegedly lost her life after police said she was beaten by her husband in Angwan Yahaya, Agyaragu, in Obi Local Government Area.

The Nasarawa State Police Command said it arrested 30-year-old Musbawu Amodu over the alleged culpable homicide of his wife. The deceased, who had been married for six years, is survived by two children, a boy and a girl.

The incident has left the family with two young children without their mother and placed renewed focus on domestic violence in the state.

Police response and suspect's account

Police Public Relations Officer Rahman Nansel said in a statement on Sunday that the alleged assault occurred at about 12:30 p.m. He said a complaint was lodged at the Agyaragu Police Division alleging that the suspect had assaulted his wife, leading to her death.

Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilized patrol personnel to the scene, where the victim was evacuated to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia, for medical examination and preservation,

Nansel said the suspect was promptly arrested and allegedly confessed during interrogation.

According to the police, the suspect told investigators that he acted in anger after the deceased allegedly refused to prepare food, following an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation. Police also said he expressed remorse over the incident.

Investigation and official response

Commissioner of Police Shetima Jauro Mohammed directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Lafia, for what the command described as a thorough, discreet and expedited investigation.

The commissioner assured residents that justice would be served and that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Mohammed strongly condemned all forms of domestic violence and urged couples and family members to embrace dialogue, patience and lawful means of resolving disagreements. He described the incident as tragic and avoidable and stressed that no misunderstanding is worth the loss of a human life.

The command also said Agyaragu and surrounding communities remain calm, with security operatives monitoring the situation. The incident has once again drawn attention to the consequences of domestic violence as police continue their investigation.
