Judicial Ruling and Sentencing

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced two senior commanders of the Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group, Ansaru, to life imprisonment. The convicts, Mahmud Usman (also known as Abu Bara'a) and Abubakar Abba (popularly called Mahmud Al-Nigeri, Isah Adam, or Mallam Mamuda), were sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty to a 32-count charge related to terrorism.

The court imposed life sentences on counts 30 and 31 of the charges filed by the Department of State Services (DSS). Additionally, Justice Nwite handed down 20-year jail terms for the remaining counts, ordering that the sentences should run concurrently from the dates of the convicts' initial arrests.

Affiliation with Global Terror Networks

The DSS, in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/464/2025, identified Usman as a native of Okene Local Government Area in Kogi State and Abba as a native of Daura Local Government Area in Katsina State. Both men were described as top commanders of Jama'atu Ansarul Muslimeena Fii Bilaadis Sudan (JAMBS), a proscribed organization with established ties to the global Al-Qaeda network.

According to the prosecution, the convicts participated in specialized training provided by Jama'atu Nusratil Islami Wal Muslimin (JNIM), a Mali-based terrorist group. This training included weapons handling, the fabrication of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), and advanced warfare tactics, which were utilized to aid and abet terrorist attacks across Nigeria between 2013 and 2015.

High-Profile Attacks and Financing

One of the most prominent allegations against the duo involved the 2022 attack on the Wawa Cantonment of the Nigerian Army in New-Bussa, Niger State, an operation that resulted in mass casualties. Usman was specifically identified as the coordinator of terrorist sleeper cells across Nigeria and the mastermind behind several high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies used to generate funds for the group.

The DSS further alleged that the convicts successfully collected ransom payments running into millions of naira from the families of their victims. In addition to terrorism-specific counts, Usman had previously been convicted on September 11, 2025, and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for his involvement in illegal mining activities linked to terror financing.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

The convicts were apprehended between May and July 2025 during intelligence-led operations conducted by Nigerian security agencies. Their arrests were officially announced on August 16 by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, who confirmed that the suspects had been placed on national and international terror watch lists due to their leadership roles in the insurgency.

The final sentencing followed a shift in the defendants' legal strategy during Monday’s proceedings. While Abba had initially pleaded not guilty, he later informed the court of his intention to change his plea after consulting with his lawyer, Mr. Husseina Tukur. Both defendants eventually entered guilty pleas to all charges, leading Justice Nwite to deliver the immediate judgment.
