Annecy 2026: Nigerian creators pitch indigenous stories to global investors

Nigeria’s animation industry will return to the Annecy International Animation Film Market for a fifth consecutive year, with more than 50 studios set to showcase their work and over 15 pitching original projects to global investors. The outing is further strengthened by the official competition selection of The Travails of Ajadi, highlighting growing international recognition for indigenous Nigerian storytelling.
Nigeria expands its presence at Annecy
Nigeria's animation industry has reinforced its position on the global creative map as more than 50 local studios head to the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Market (MIFA), with a Nigerian animated short, The Travails of Ajadi, earning an official competition selection at the world's most prestigious animation festival.
The achievement marks Nigeria's fifth consecutive appearance at Annecy, underscoring the country's rapid emergence as one of Africa's leading animation powerhouses and opening fresh opportunities for international partnerships, investment and global distribution of indigenous stories.
Over 15 Nigerian animation studios will pitch original projects to global producers, broadcasters, distributors and investors during the festival, while the Nigerian Pavilion, organised by the French Embassy in Nigeria in partnership with Animation Nigeria, will host more than 50 studios showcasing the richness and diversity of the country's animation ecosystem.
Held annually in the French Alps, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival attracts more than 17,000 professionals from across the global animation industry, making it one of the most influential platforms for creators seeking international recognition and business opportunities.
The Travails of Ajadi earns competition selection
Adding to Nigeria's impressive outing is The Travails of Ajadi, a stop-motion animated short directed by Adeoye Adetunji, which secured a coveted place in the festival's official competition.
The film follows the journey of a frustrated fisherman who survives a violent storm at sea and confronts a divine voice in search of answers to years of hardship, only to discover that his suffering had prepared him for a greater purpose.
Organisers said Nigeria's sustained presence at Annecy reflects the country's expanding influence in the global animation landscape and the sector's growing contribution to employment, innovation and the creative economy.
They noted that MIFA has closely tracked the development of animation across Africa over the years, with Nigeria consistently standing out through its vibrant creative ecosystem, growing technical expertise and exceptional storytelling talent.
