A new biography of civil society icon Innocent Chukwuma chronicles his journey from a war-torn childhood to becoming a leading human rights advocate. The book highlights Chukwuma's resilience and his commitment to service, even in the face of significant personal and systemic obstacles.

Born into the turbulence of the Nigerian Civil War and raised against the backdrop of hardship, Innocent Chukwuma could easily have become another statistic of a generation scarred by conflict. Instead, he grew into a social entrepreneur, human rights advocate, and civil society icon whose life became a testament to resilience, service, and the possibility of rising above difficult beginnings.
His remarkable journey is chronicled in Against All Odds, a 2025 biography authored by Obinna Ezugwu. The book was reviewed at a recent September Book Reading Session organized by the Innocent Chukwuemeka Chukwuma Empowerment Foundation (ICCEF) at Roving Heights Bookstore in Lagos. The biography does more than document the life of the late activist; it tells the story of a man who repeatedly confronted adversity and refused to allow his circumstances to define his future.

For his widow and Executive Chair of ICCEF, Mrs. Josephine Chukwuma, the book represents a way of completing a dream her husband could not fulfill before his death in 2021. Chukwuma had planned to travel to London for a three-month sabbatical to write his memoirs, but he passed away just three days before his scheduled departure.
My husband died in 2021, suddenly, within a week. And he died at the time, he died on April 3rd. He was to travel to London, to the UK, April 6th, for a three-month sabbatical, to go and sit down and write his memoirs. So he had actually started this, and he had done the outline and everything.
— Josephine Chukwuma, Executive Chair, Innocent Chukwuemeka Chukwuma Empowerment Foundation (ICCEF)
While his unfinished memoir had the working title Possibilities Unlimited, the eventual biography was titled Against All Odds to better capture the circumstances of his birth during the war and the challenges he encountered throughout his development. Mrs. Chukwuma noted that her husband's life serves as an example for young Nigerians currently facing bleak futures.

Chukwuma's path to becoming a respected voice in civil society was marked by significant setbacks. He was expelled from school twice, including during his final year at the university. Despite these hurdles, he returned to complete his education, eventually graduating with a second-class upper degree, missing a first-class distinction by only two marks.
According to Mrs. Chukwuma, these episodes demonstrated a determination to persist in the face of injustice. This philosophy of service became the cornerstone of his career. When he founded the CLEEN Foundation in 1998, he preferred to describe himself as its "Chief Servant" rather than focusing on his title as executive director, highlighting a personality more interested in impact than status.
What struck me was that he was always introduced as a very big person, but he rarely just sat quietly somewhere in the corner, and you struggle to reconcile the person that is being introduced with the person who is seated. He was a kind person. He was a feminist to the core who respected everybody, no matter your status, no matter your gender.

Beyond the documentation of his life, the ICCEF is actively working to translate Chukwuma’s legacy into tangible opportunities for others. Established in 2023, the foundation has focused on providing scholarships for indigent students in secondary schools and universities. To date, the initiative has supported 21 students, ensuring that the spirit of empowerment continues.
Richard Mammah, President of the Network of Book Lovers and Reading Promoters, described Chukwuma’s story as one of ultimate resilience. He emphasized that Chukwuma’s life demonstrated the importance of confronting dysfunction rather than accepting it as permanent. By identifying problems and challenging injustice, Chukwuma sought to make systems work better for all citizens.
I think it will be resilience because, you know, when it's like when you are hit and you fall down, there's an option to stay down and there's also an option to get up and strive again. If I've come to a place where there's dysfunction, my task, my responsibility is to try and make it functional.
