A 19-year-old woman, Khadija Ibrahim, has been arrested by the Kebbi State Police Command for allegedly stealing a newborn baby and presenting the child to her husband as her own. The arrest follows an investigation into a dramatic case of deception where the suspect allegedly led her husband to believe she was pregnant for approximately nine months.

Khadija, a resident of Rikoto in Zuru Local Government Area of Kebbi State, reportedly faced significant emotional and social pressure due to her inability to conceive. Authorities suggest that this pressure, intensified by seeing her peers become mothers, drove the suspect to orchestrate the false pregnancy and subsequent theft to maintain the ruse.

The Circumstances of the Theft

According to police reports, the incident occurred on July 23, 2025. Khadija allegedly exploited a moment of trust with the biological mother, Fatima Muhammad, shortly after she had given birth. Under the guise of offering assistance, the suspect reportedly offered to fetch hot water for the new mother.

Instead of returning with the water, Ibrahim allegedly fled the scene with the newborn. The sudden disappearance left Fatima Muhammad in a state of distress, transforming the joy of childbirth into a protracted nightmare as the family began a desperate search for the missing infant.

Recovery and Police Intervention

The baby remained missing for over a year until a sustained investigation by the Kebbi State Police Command led to a breakthrough. On August 14, 2026, operatives apprehended Khadija Ibrahim and successfully recovered the child. The newborn has since been reunited with her biological mother, Fatima Muhammad, ending the family's period of uncertainty.

The Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Umar M. Hadejia, commended the investigative team for their diligence and professionalism in securing the safe recovery of the child. He further reassured the public that the command remains committed to the protection of children and ensuring that those who commit such crimes are brought to justice.

This case highlights the severe consequences that can stem from societal expectations regarding marriage and motherhood. At 19, Khadija Ibrahim now faces serious legal charges stemming from an alleged attempt to conceal her reproductive challenges from her spouse through criminal means.
